Riding and Hands on Learning Experiences for School Groups

Any time spent with a horse is a learning experience. Whilst horse riding is considered a sport and recreational activity, it also greatly encourages young people to strengthen their leadership and interpersonal skills. Whether time is spent in the saddle or just around a horse, they prompt a person to be empathetic, self-aware, and hold responsibility for their actions.

These are all essential skills that aid in helping a young person navigate through challenges in their lifetime. We operate alongside the stunning Waimakariri River, only 15 minutes from the central city. Our team of horses and ponies are excellent teachers and have years of experience taking care of young people. Our staff are knowledgeable and friendly with vast experience taking care of younger clients. The services we offer to school groups are interactive, inclusive and fun whilst maintaining a high standard of safety.

Our Services

1. Groom and Trek
This service offers an opportunity to interact with the horses prior to riding on the trails. It allows young clients to gain confidence and comfortability before getting into the saddle. Our treks along the beautiful Waimakariri River offer great scenery and are interactive with our guides speaking of the history of our horses and the area as we cruise along the trails. This service allocates 30 minutes for grooming and 30 minutes for riding.

2. Groom and Group Lesson
This service offers an opportunity to interact with the horses prior to joining in on a group riding lesson. Our group riding lessons offer the chance to learn and practice some more skills working towards being able to ride independently with confidence. This service allocates 30 minutes for grooming and 30 minutes for riding.

3. Trek

4. The service offers the opportunity to spend more time in the saddle.

The trek in this service may include a river crossing (river permitting). This service allocates 60 minutes for riding.
All of our services include a welcome and safety briefing, time for introductions between our staff and clients and the opportunity to feed the horses before finishing up. Therefore, all of our experiences run for 1.5hours.

What We Can Capacitate
We can currently cater for groups of 10 – 20 riders in one trekking booking, depending on the details of each client and the service you would like to participate in. We can currently cater for groups of 10 riders in our group lessons. We take great care in assuring that each client is matched with the right horse for their weight, height and riding ability. Please note we currently maintain a weight limit of 95kgs for our treks and 60kgs for our group lessons to ensure the wellbeing of our horses. We can organise alternative services that don’t involve being in the saddle for those above the weight limit. If you have any special requests for your experience with us, please don’t hesitate to ask. At this time, we have availability during the week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and upon request during the weekend.

Testimonial
“We have been to the Waimak River Riding Centre many times now with our groups. The horse trek is always a big hit and everyone raves about it for weeks afterwards. The Waimak River Riding team are professional and organized, great communicators and provide such an awesome experience that we know we will be back with future groups. What stood out for me was the ability of the staff to organize our large group but then cater for the individual needs of the riders with a range of abilities and comfort levels. I would highly recommend this organization to anyone, from the seasoned rider to someone facing their fears. Thank you!”
